Approach and Overview

If you have arrived at this page, I suspect you are ready to move toward recovery for yourself, your child, or a loved one. If you determine I might be a good fit to help, please contact me by phone to discuss your desires for therapy. I am ready and prepared to help.

Eating Disorders are not simply about weight, eating, or body image. Rather, these disorders represent a complex interaction of emotional, social, and physical factors. Eating Disorders can take over and pull you away from joyful living. It is my goal to help you establish a healthy connection with eating, food and your body.

About My Training and Experience

I have extensive experience and years of supervised training treating individuals with Eating Disorders. I completed a pre-doctoral internship at the George Washington University, where Eating Disorder treatment was my designated area of specialty. My pre-doctoral clinical training and postdoctoral assignment was served at an Intensive Outpatient Eating Disorder Program in Athens, GA. I have served on the staff of Eating Disorder Intensive Outpatient Programs, providing individual, group, and family therapy. I served as the Clinical Programming Director for a university based Eating Disorder program. I have offered countless therapy groups related to meal support, symptom management, family support, and more. Currently, I offer individual and family therapy to individuals in all stages of the recovery process. When enough members commit, I offer group therapy on various eating disorder topics.

Treatment Approach

The recovery process can be lengthy and challenging. My approach is warm, collaborative, informative, interactive and fun. I believe it is very possible to recover and reconnect with life. Yes, you can do this!
I utilize a variety of evidence-based treatments, including:

Modified Family Based Therapy (FBT)
Acceptance Commitment Therapy (ACT)
Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT)
Interpersonal Psychotherapy
Exposure with Response Prevention Therapy (ERP)

Modified Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT)

Treatment plans will differ depending on severity of symptoms. Most importantly, treatment is tailored to your individual needs. I may request that you seek the care of a physician for medical monitoring. I might also encourage you to work with a registered dietitian for meal planning. I work closely with several local providers who specialize in the treatment of eating disorders and will guide you in finding a treatment team. Finally, group therapy might be recommended as part of your recovery plan. The full treatment team approach provides the greatest opportunity for success and may reduce the need for inpatient treatment.

I am committed to staying in close contact with all members of your treatment team and will coordinate your care with compassion and knowledge. I also maintain knowledge of the various residential treatment facilities throughout the country. I am prepared to educate you on the different approaches and can help you make the transition to residential treatment should you need or desire such care. I will also stay in contact with your residential treatment team, with your permission. In doing so, I can be prepared to resume our work should you desire my services upon your return.

A Special Note to Parents
I enjoy helping the entire family recover from the wave of devastation that can be left by an Eating Disorder. You will not be blamed or judged as parents. You love your child and want them well. Their health and recovery will be our treatment goal. We will work toward skills training, meal support, and emotional balance. You will be a critical member of the treatment team in the recovery process. Family participation will be different for every family, and is dependent upon many factors. Dr. Floyd will provide a clear treatment plan at the time of the initial evaluation, and will refine this plan throughout treatment.

For minors, or even young adults living at home, modified Family Based Treatment (FBT) might be indicated. FBT informed techniques will empower parents to provide full meal support at home; gradually returning your child to autonomy. Please view the FBT link on this page for more details.

As you may have already discovered, your child or teen will likely resist treatment. My style is to engage your child in the recovery process. My approach is to support them with compassion, humor, and tools for working through the challenges of recovery!
